November 14, 2010: community meeting at Jacaranda School between the children's guardians and our teachers and headmistresses.
Busy Sunday at Jacaranda under a scorching sun! Hundreds of guardians came to meet our primary school and secondary school teachers and headmistresses. Communication with the students ' guardians is essential in order to run a successful school, and many points were discussed that day. We talked about school attendance, punctuality, discipline, exams preparation, but also about our nutrition and medical programs, especially for our HIV positive students. The guardians, mothers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles' understanding and cooperation is essential for the children to study and develop in good conditions and to stay in good health. Once informed and aware of the programs we run at the Jacaranda School, the guardians are able to care for their children, to motivate them, to listen to them, to inform us about problems they encounter at home, and to make sure they come to school each and every day.
By helping children go to school all the way to college, our goal is also to help the local communities develop. In Malawi, parents and guardians know how important education is for their children and they are thrilled to see them pass exams and go further with school. We organize such community meetings at least once a term.

Mrs Ndaferankhande, our Primary School headmistress, joined the Jacaranda School in July 2010 after a long career in public schools in Malawi. She was the headmistress at Chichiri Primary School in Blantyre for 13 years, one of the best schools in the country. Her vast experience and her leadership skills are a great asset to the Jacaranda School for Orphans. She addressed the audience, along with the Secondary School Headmistress and some of the teachers.
