March 2008: Purchase of 75 secondary school Textbooks
Thanks to a collect organized in the UK by Flora Sheppard, we have been able to purchase 75 textbooks for our secondary school classes. This is of huge significance to the Jacaranda school, since we basically did not have any books at all for our secondary school section! We selected the books the following way:
- five books for five different subjects for three different classes, Form 2, 3 and 4: English, Chichewa, Mathematics, Biology or Physical Science, and History or Geography.

We can now start the second school term in much, much better conditions; the students are able to share the books and the teachers can directly refer to the texts without having to write paragraphs and paragraphs on the boards... The purchase of those books will make a tremendous difference in the efficiency of the lessons and ultimately, in the students' results.

We still need a lot of additional textbooks to run the Jacaranda school in good conditions: five books per subject for a class of 25 students, is simply not enough; our Form 1 class still does not have any books; and we could not purchase any for certain subjects, such as Business Studies, Social Science or Bible Knowledge.
